I am Dr. Çağlar Çömez, a philosopher specializing in legal philosophy, moral philosophy, and Kantian practical philosophy.
Current Position
I am currently a Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (Research Associate) at the Lehrstuhl für Praktische Philosophie und Philosophie der Antike, Institut für Philosophie, University of Bonn. My research is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation).
Current Project: "Kant's Legal Philosophy: From Dependency to Contemporary Applications"
This project examines the relationship between Kant's moral philosophy and his philosophy of law. Building on this analysis, it applies the findings to central problems in contemporary legal philosophy, particularly legal personhood and paternalism. The project is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation).
Previous Work and Work in Progress
I have published in venues such as Kantian Review and the Jahrbuch für Recht und Ethik (JRE). Check out my Kantian Review article here and my JRE article here.
In my work in progress "Kant's Idealism in Jurisprudence", I show how Kant combines the legal positivist separability thesis with a conception of law as a moral ideal.
In another work in progress, "Kantian Arguments Against Child-Simulating Sexual AI," I investigate whether Kant's moral theory can ground our intuition that child sex robots are morally problematic. I argue that there is a powerful Kantian case to be made against child sex robots.

In addition to my specialization in legal philosophy, moral philosophy, and Kantian practical philosophy, I have an interest in Heideggerian phenomenology. I presented a work in progress titled "Knowing as Being-in-the-World: An Alternative Epistemology in Heidegger’s Being and Time" at the 7th International Meßkirch Heidegger-Conference in May 2026.
Teaching
I have taught undergraduate and graduate courses in philosophy at the University of Bonn, Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, and Boğaziçi University. My teaching closely reflects my research interests. I have taught courses on "Normative Legal Philosophy," "Kantian Constructivism," "Philosophy of Punishment," "Morality and Law," and "Kantian Moral Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence". In winter semester 2026/2027, I will teach "Applied Ethics and Kantian Moral Theory: Contemporary Problems and Perspectives" at the University of Bonn.
Alongside my academic teaching, I also teach Turkish, my native language, at the Volkshochschule Bonn. See here for my current Turkish courses.
Doctoral Research
I completed my PhD at Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg in April 2025 with a dissertation on Kant's legal and moral philosophy titled Kant's Natural Law Theory: An Assessment. My dissertation explores the place of Kant's legal philosophy within contemporary analytical jurisprudence, thereby filling a significant gap in current Kant literature.
Part of my doctoral research was supported by DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholarships.
